What to do with lots of books & no place to put them!
This lovely modern home has wonderful coastal and hinterland views that are captured by the many windows in this living room. The problem was there was nowhere to put anything! The clients needed storage for their books and personal items and had added several bookcases, but the room felt disjointed. The porthole windows looked over the neighbours roof and due to their western aspect, the sun was starting to effect the carpet. The windows were too small for blinds and the previous owners had covered them over with cardboard!
Our design solution was to cover the porthole windows and build in wall to wall, floor to ceiling joinery that has given them the wonderful library they wanted. The cupboards contain a myriad of objects, whilst the open shelves allow us to feature some beautiful key pieces. This over-sized clock pays tribute to the vintage look they were after, along with black and white photos from their travels that we had framed. Personal items really give a space soul and are a wonderful talking point. In this instance we wanted the modern handle free joinery to blend with its surrounds and let their style and beautiful view be the natural feature.
To complete this reading nook, we added these gorgeous high back armchairs that have been upholstered in a donkey grey striped velvet, wonderfully inviting to relax with a great book! We just love these antique bronze side tables too. They are light and easy to move, particularly when the kids want to play. After all, this home is definitely about family!
