Ways to Colour Your World this Spring!

By Kristie Virgo – Lifestyle Interiors Lifestyle Kids

Yippee! Spring is clearly upon us, particularly if you live on the Sunshine Coast.  We have been blessed with crisp mornings, big blue skies and the fresh buds of a new season.  You can’t help but open the doors and windows and let the sunshine in.

The world really comes alive with colour at this time of year but what about your home?  Does the mere mention of the word COLOUR send you running for cover or do you embrace it in all its glory.  Well perhaps I am somewhere in between.  I love seeing homes where colour has been used well – sometimes its a “wow – wish I’d done that.”

So how do you use colour and not feel overwhelmed by it?  Think about these things to get started.

1.  What colours really make you smile?  Do they make you feel calm & at peace, energetic or slightly frazzled?

I think we all have a natural tendency towards certain colours – those that make us feel good, well embrace that!  Look online or in magazines for inspiration.  Do you find yourself loving the same type of rooms, the same colours?  Then add these tones to your room.  Sometimes its good to challenge ourselves and try something different.  If you like the idea of yellow but don’t want a whole room or even your sofa in it, then settle on some new accessories, some flowers and cushions.  Remember, there is always an element of each new trend that you can adapt to make your own.

2.  Who lives in your home?  Are you a woman in a house of men (like my home) or a house full of little girls?

It’s important to find the right balance with colours so that everyone feels AT HOME.  So if you love fuchsia pink but live in a house of boys, then use it in small quantities.  Floral fabrics are making a big comeback.  Instead of using a big floral doona with loads of floral cushions and curtains, perhaps a simple crisp white throw-over bedspread with a lovely floral quilt folded at the end of the bed, along with a featured floral cushion and a couple of textured ones might keep all parties happy!

You can introduce colour in so many ways – new cushions, bedlinen, art, flowers and paint are easy and not too expensive.

Modern Chevron 12 Print Laguna Chevron Yellow  Chevron Rug Iron Stools

This season sees the return of the geometric pattern – bold Chevron designs (zigzags) are very popular.  These gorgeous new chevron prints make a bold statement and look spectacular.  I also love this fun outdoor yellow chevron rug – made from recycled shopping bags – very eco-friendly.  This gorgeous wool rug sits beautifully with these industrial iron stools, what a great dining area!

Adding pattern & texture with cushions

Big florals and strong stripes are also on the horizon.  And if you love pattern then be brave and mix it up.  I love this window seat that has beautiful coastal views.  Here we have used a soft duck egg blue, wheat tones, small floral, bold geometric and textured plains and the result is sophisticated, visually interesting and despite the mix of patterns, still very relaxing.  Don’t forget size and proportion matter too when looking at cushions.

Ultimately, when you walk through the door your home should feel warm, inviting, friendly, well HOME no matter what colours you use!

Enjoy the spring!
